Chaos Galaxy was a really good game that I thoroughly enjoyed. I tried to get in touch with the solo dev, Han Zhiyu, and luck would have it that when I managed to do so he had just announced his new game, Chaos Front. As such, I had to chat with him about it. Take a look!

1. What inspired you to start working on Chaos Front?

Developing the Chaos Galaxy series has already satisfied some of my creative desires for grand strategy games. I hope to try something different. Focus more on a specific warzone and individual roles and teams, and create more detailed gameplay and world design. Chaos Front will expand the world of Chaos Galaxy from various dimensions.

2. Can you tell me a bit more about the story of the game and the world behind it?

The story of the Chaos Front takes place a thousand years ago before the time of Chaos Galaxy.

The Solar Union, the first galaxy regime in human history, was destroyed due to corruption and tyranny during the Great Rebellion. After its fall, the galaxy was divided among three great powers. Unable to defeat each other, eventually, they agreed to a ceasefire and established the Astronautical Committee to manage thousands of independent planets.

Unfortunately, the Astronautical Committee soon became a tool for the three powers to control and exploit the galaxy. Interstellar navigation was restricted, and planets were subjected to economic exploitation.

In the 37th year of the Committee Calendar, a revolution broke out on the planet Massilia in the Centersea Sector. The Committee quickly decided to send fleets from the three powers to suppress the revolutionary planets. However, the Committee Army was weakened due to the defection of the Black Flag, and the front line became a deadlock.

The great powers had to allow the Committee Army to recruit mercenaries to supplement their forces in the war zone. The Revolutionary Army and the Black Flag also began recruiting mercenaries.

Militia, pirates, nobles, and technicians from all over the galaxy rushed to Centersea to join the war. Mercenary groups quickly became a main force in the Centersea warfare.

Under the temptation of wealth and honor, beneath the banner of revolution and freedom, and stirred by hegemony and conspiracy, the Galaxy was falling into a chaotic era…

3. This seems to be a way more story-focused project rather than grand strategy with events. Is that the case and if yes, what prompted this change?

I believe that the 4X game represented by Civilization series and the historical strategy game of the old KOEI represent two directions of the grand strategy game. I prefer the latter which is full of stories and characters.

I once published several novels and as a translator, I have translated several Warhammer 40K novels for publication in China. I hope to create a space opera story like Warhammer 40K and Star Wars. Chaos Galaxy and Chaos Front are also a way for me to create stories via a game.

4. Are you opting more on a “mission” based structure for this game instead of the galaxy map of the previous ones?

In Chaos Front, there will still be a map where players’ mercenary groups can move in spaceships to search for missions and recruit characters, but players are no longer commanding many fleets and building planets as faction leaders as in Chaos Galaxy.

5. Where could people find you in order to learn more about Chaos Front and keep up with future updates?

Until the game is released, I will post the latest development logs on the Steam store page of Chaos Front every month. You can also find me on Discord.

6. What is the current status of the game? Do you expect to release it soon?

I have just completed most of the design and am producing art resources. I hope to release a DEMO in October this year.
